Violence Against Women Awareness Workshop

What a great weekend for the Violence Against Women Awareness Workshop! On Saturday, November 23, Megan started off our workshop with a healing song and a smudge. Then, throughout the day we had inspiring guest speakers and some fun activities in between. Kahente Horn Miller discussed traditional roles of Haudenosaunee women & Indigenous womanism. Mary McComber from Kahnawake Shakotiia’takenhas Community Services discussed violence prevention and Faceless Doll workshop. Bridget Tolley of Families of Sisters in Spirit shared her story and journey trying to find justice for her mother. Colleen Cardinal, of Families of Sisters in Spirit, also shared her emotional story about her sisters. To end the first day, Officer Walter Montour & Corporal Margaret Mayo of the Kahnawake Peacekeepers led a fun self defense demonstration.

On the second day,  Jessica Danforth of the Native Youth Sexual Health Network, led action-based activities regarding consent, healthy relationships and boundaries. We also watched inspiring videos and made a few art projects to internalize what was learned over the weekend.
